Are you looking to build a deck, porch, or patio this spring? It's time for you to get started.
1. Wish List
Consider where you are going to live and how you will use it. Next, create your wish list. Is privacy a concern? How about shade? Do you dream of a fireplace in your home? Find inspiration on magazines and websites such as Pinterest, Instagram, or Houzz. If you have the opportunity, it's better to show your porch builder, deck, or patio what you want. It's not hard to see why they say that a picture is worth 1,000 words.
2. Budget
How big is your number? Do you have any room for improvement? When you are ready to start planning your patio, deck, or porch, your builder will be able to help you decide if your budget is feasible and what compromises you can make. To get started, it is important to understand what your budget is. You may be able to get additional funds if you begin the process early.
3. Final Plan
You'll work with your builder to finalize the details of your patio, porch, or deck. Once the planning phase is completed, a final cost will have been determined and communicated. A detailed plan, schedules, contracts, and timelines will all be created. Then, you can officially set a start date.
4. Materials
Once you have your final plan, your porch, patio, or deck builder can order materials. He or she wants to ensure a seamless ordering process. We all know that sellers and manufacturers sometimes have other plans. The pandemic's shortages have shown the unpredictable nature and consequences of business. You can start your project early, so you have enough time to resolve any material issues and have it finished by spring.
5. Permits and Approvals
To start building your deck, patio, or porch, you will need to apply for and get approval for permits. There are many hoops to jump through. Even though an experienced builder may be familiar with the process, there are still surprises and delays. HOA approval, if required by your neighborhood, can add an additional layer to the process. HOA committees meet only once a month, so it is important to get your information in advance.
6. Building
If everything goes according to plan, how long will your project take? It can take several weeks or longer, depending on the size and complexity of a project, before it is completed. Weather delays, inspections required during the building process (like electrical), as well as other issues such as material delivery issue, can make it more likely that your project will take longer than you expected. You can absorb delays and still keep up with spring if you start early.
